Chapter 6

Growing up, Zane Maddox had always known what was expected of him. He’d been raised having the best of everything - school, friends, life’s comforts and indulgences. All in readiness for him to take over the Maddox conglomerate and hold up the family name.

He’d played along for years because it had suited him. Taking over the company had come sooner than planned but he’d risen to the challenge and surpassed even his expectations. His driven nature made it unthinkable for him to fail at anything he’d set his mind to.

When he’d met Irina back then, much had been about playing to the tune of his parents and hers. Their fortunes would merge and the beautiful Irina would make a great trophy wife. She was a magnificent hostess and they were physically compatible. She’d been dutiful from the start, willing to play the submissive role once she noted Zane’s dominant streak.

Would it have been a perfect marriage? Of course he’d never know, not now. But Zane had indeed developed deep feelings for her and he’d been shocked and disillusioned by her death.

Just the day before his father had decided on a meeting and they’d talked. “Why did you do it?” Zac had asked laconically as soon as they started the conversation.

Zane didn’t pretend to wonder what his father meant. “I didn’t intend to settle down ever. Getting an heir was all that concerned me. I wasn’t interested in anything long-term and neither did I need any woman laying claim to my time or emotions just because I slept with her or wanted a baby. My arrangement with Ciara would have taken care of everything.”

“But nothing ever really goes according to plan does it?” Zac Maddox had said wryly. “You fell, hard. So hard maybe you stopped thinking straight.”

Zane had arched a brow in surprise when he saw his father’s face had hardened. “I’m in full possession of my senses, on the contrary. I’m walking into this with my eyes open Dad, as I did from the start. Even when I thought I knew the outcome - even when it then changed from my original intentions - I always knew what I was doing and exactly what I was getting into.”

“Or you simply think you did,” Zac said with that same rueful tone. “Let’s face it, your mother was right about one thing. Ciara isn’t exactly bringing much to the table. I mean, I have a beautiful grand-daughter and that’s precious. Really precious. But what will you do when it gets out you’re about to marry a woman with virtually no background? Stocks rise and fall based on things like this. Why would you treat it as a joke? Or do you really think your high flying romance is all that matters?”

Zane had expelled an impatient breath. “I know the risks. I’ve spent the past several months working my butt off to safeguard against any backlash. Strengthening my position enough to ensure that my personal life need never have bearing on how I run the company.
